The academic portion of the SSI Navigation Course lays the foundation for mastering underwater navigation. Using SSI’s interactive e-learning platform, you’ll study key topics, such as:

• Compass navigation techniques for precise direction underwater
• Natural navigation methods, including identifying landmarks and reading the seabed
• Estimating distances underwater using kick cycles and time
• Search patterns and navigation strategies for locating dive sites and points of interest
• Planning dives with entry and exit points and ensuring return accuracy

The self-paced online learning is reinforced with quizzes, videos, and case studies, giving you the knowledge you need before starting your practical training.

Confined Water Sessions (Optional Workshop)

While the SSI Navigation Course doesn’t require a confined water session, an optional workshop offers a controlled environment to practice essential skills. During this session, you’ll:

• Practice compass readings and correct orientation
• Simulate search patterns like expanding squares or U-shaped patterns
• Develop buoyancy control for steady and precise movements while navigating
• Coordinate buddy navigation techniques to enhance teamwork underwater

This session helps build comfort with your equipment and techniques before heading out to open water.

Open Water Sessions

The open water sessions are where you’ll apply everything you’ve learned, navigating real-world dive sites in Malapascua’s beautiful underwater environment. Key skills practiced include:

• Using a compass underwater to maintain your bearings
• Applying natural navigation techniques by identifying marine landmarks
• Executing search patterns to locate specific objects or points of interest
• Tracking your progress by estimating distance using kick cycles
• Navigating back to your starting point with precision and confidence

These open water sessions provide practical experience that will allow you to plan and execute dives independently. After completing the course, you’ll have the skills to confidently explore new dive sites without fear of getting lost, making every dive an exciting and rewarding adventure.
